Re: Sx2 plus cnc conversion
would love to see what you have done so far, i have a x2 i am thinking of converting but would like to use ball screws if i can but first want to build a simple sub frame to mount the z axis to to get rid of the dreaded flex prblems

HI mate
I wanted to use ballscrews but there isn't enough room under the Y axis
so I used a ballscrew for the Z axis but I'm guna use leadscrews for the X and Y ( haven't had them machined yet as I haven't got a lathe )

This is my machine
the controller is in the house at the moment so I can draw a nice wiring diagram for safe keeping and sharing

My z axis mounts all made manually on this machine and ballscrew
And nema23 425oz stepper
I also had to move the spindle motor forward so I got a shorter belt of fleebay and made new mounts

Got the X and Y motor mounts of eBay and had to make a 6mm spacer to compensate for the length of the lovejoy couplers
i also made a plate to house a bearing and thrust bearing

Just got a lathe cheaper than what people where offering to end machine 2 leadscrews for me :cocksure:
So over the next couple of days I plan to clean this bad boy up and machine my leadscrews for my sx2
i will post some pics of my progress on the lathe over the next week or two
Need to get a single phase motor and that can run variable speed
any ideas anyone?

Re: Sx2 plus cnc conversion
A nice idea would be to post the pictures the correct way up. its difficult standing on your head. :joker: ..Clive
Re: Sx2 plus cnc conversion
That looks likie an Australian import....make sure it cuts the threads the right way round not upside down and back to front...:joker:
Re: Sx2 plus cnc conversion
Haha I'm new to posting stuff on here
I will get there in the end

Stick with the 3phase motor and get a VFD, you'll regret going to a single phase.

Started cleaning the lathe and got a bit carried away lol
i had some paint of a steel structure I fitted in work and it's fire rated paint so I thought y not
Need a good vfd for a 0.5 hp 3 phase motor any suggestions?
where can I get a tool post also as the ones that came with it are home made and don't look good?

Re: Sx2 plus cnc conversion
Finished the lathe up to now I have put a misubishi vfd controller and a 3 phase motor on it an it runs well. I can control the speed easily
I bought new bronze nuts for the top slide and crossfeed and a new top slide leadscrew
Ive just finished my sx2 leadscrews and am waiting for some alloy to be posted and then I can make the mounts for the delrin nuts that I've also finished

What is the easiest way to learn how to draw a part then turn it to a g-code for mach3 ?
Or am I best buying a digitizing probe of fleebay from US for $199
