Driver goes unidirectional

Hi,

I have got a problem with a motor driver that only goes in one direction. I have swapped inputs, but the same result and I have swapped output connectors to verify that the problem stays with that particular driver.

The bad news is that it is a driver that is not available on aliexpress, so I can't get a direct replacement. The worse news is that it is a PD2064M :grief: from MD :grief::grief:.

I am running it at 48volts. There was no smell of magic smoke and nothing inside it looks amiss.

Any ideas, or do I just bite the bullet and get new drivers ?

Have you tried putting 5V on the dir pin to see if it reverses I also have a faulty driver doing the same it could also be the opto blown if it has one

It's a good idea Clive, but the input to the driver is on an IDC 2x4 pin connector and the documentation is in Chinglish. I have had to make an adapter to fit these drivers to a normal BoB, as the original BoB went up the Swanee a long time ago. I have got 3 Parker Digiplan drivers spare, so I might just wire one in place. An alternative is to get this kit and use the drivers. I have now opened up the driver and taken the circuit board out. It looks as though it was made in a shed, the soldering is poor and there is flux residue everywhere. I have cleaned it up, but hold out little hope. The optos look like 1L6704, at least that's the marking on IC's where optos ought to be.

I'll plug it back in and try it, just for fun.

I am annoyed with myself for buying the original kit from those people in Devon as it was overpriced and obsolete when they sold it. Support from them was non-existent, so I would not even think about any help now.

I have been trying desperately to get the machine up an running, as I have 18 carved wood blocks to make, and other jobs are waiting on it.

page 8 is, how you must connect Step=CW and Dir=CC
If I understand it right, free must be open or L if the motor should run.
If you have problems with connection to the small 16 pin connector, there are single pin and socket wires from chinese dealers for breadboards.
These parts you can use for connecting.

This is the adapter I made. I think the way forward is to get the 3 m542h kit and wire it up properly (with real wire !)

No Clive, I just ordered the M542H kit for £110. The drivers I have got are rubbish anyway and obsolete. As I said in an earlier post (now archived), it is all out of date Chinese kit. The original BoB and these drivers were made by Tonman and there seems to be only one supplier in the UK who is selling a 3 axis controller box for nearly £900 with these inside.

It saddens me that there seems to be a number of CNC machine makers in the UK who are basically rip-off merchants. Dicey practices seem to abound and companies are selling flimsy, poorly designed, over-priced kit to companies and individuals, who buy on the expectation of customer service and support. It is a world of CNC dishonesty.

Did I mention anybody specifically ? I was being general about the shameful businesses who rip profits and have no intention of supporting clients. I think you mentioned one such in the north of Nottinghamshire who was selling machines costing over £9,000 that still use parallel ports.

Oh yes and closer to 10k than 9k and best of all that PP runs thru basic PCPPS bob costing £20.! . Infact there's less than £400 worth in the whole control panel and that includes the steel Box.!! . . . . . Wonder why it's got troubles.???? (Thou PP is abart to get a bullet.!)

There are members builds on here that put these machines to absolute shame in most every department and cost less than third to build.

I don't think you've said anything that leaves you or me liable Rob, Jazz's comment is based on hearsay (even though he knows the facts around what he's referring to).

Lee Chill out I was having a bit of fun with Rob and wasn't based on anything other than previous experiences after clashing on similair subject/s with certain companys.!

Nevertheless I would like to reiterate that I am very surprised at the number of companies in this country (and I suppose that you can extrapolate to include the rest of the world) that design, build and sell plainly unsuitable machines to individuals and small businesses. To compound their felony, they then disappear when support is needed by the customer.

There also happens to be a number of members who are peddling their wares by passing themselves off as satisfied customers. These are generally fairly easily spotted. I respect much more the companies that state their business, showcase their products and accept genuine comments in the spirit of improving their offering.

I don't know the mix of forum members with regard to amateur (like me) to fully professional engineers, but it would be interesting to find out.

I have my ideals of honesty and integrity and I expect the same of the forum. I do not want to be involved in a slanging match or forum politics. I enjoy the colourful contributions from some members and recognize that sometimes they are forthright and largely well meaning.

I much prefer to live my life with love and good humour.

There, I have said my piece and this thread has wandered seriously off-topic.

I am waiting for a new set of M542H drivers to arrive, which also includes a BoB, LPT cable and USB cable. The last three I can do without, I have a box full of LPT cables, still in their packets, enough USB cables to tow a car with, but being a hoarder, I can't bring myself to sling them out. If they ever do a TV series called Workshop Clearout, I'll be on it.

Hopefully the new drivers will get the machine going, to keep me making things until I get round to my steel gantry build.

Well, I have taken delivery of three new drivers and wired them in this afternoon. I had a bit of a problem determining the microstepping of the old drivers, so I started from first principles and all seems OK, the machine is cutting properly to dimensions.

Ther is one small glitch to sort out, Estop and Limits seem to randomly trigger. They are NC circuits, so I need to consider what resistance there is between the GND on the BoB and the input wire to the BoB terminals. I'll do that tomorrow afternoon.

I am just pleased to have taken out those ruddy Tonman PD2064M drivers.

I sorted it, but it wasn't an easy one to spot. A wire had broken at a soldered terminal and the heat-shrink was holding it in place. When I put the cover on the box, the lid was pushing the 'joint' enough to disconnect it. With the lid off there was no fault to find with a meter.

Hopefully it is all 'solid' now.
