Carbon steel, case hardened I use. Your screws should be case hardened also.
Its not a hard job to do but there is a "nack" to it, once you work that out you should speed up, so i'd say have a go yourself.
Check a few of the balls as some maybe a different size, if you look on most of the standard Ballnut technical documentations, it gives you the size for the balls in those units, you may find you need something of an imperial flavor however :)Lee
