Thread: Stepper Motor Wiring

Hello,
I am having to rewire my stepper motors, the motors themselves have 4 wires:
red
yellow
blue
green
Are these all the same on each motor? Im just not sure which pins to wire them too on the control box you see

not always the same I'm afraid. I've had to switch single pairs of wires around before.
Do you have a model number on the stepper so you could google search a manual?

Manual? christ chance would be a fine think lol.
Motors have this labelled on them:
Anchuan
57HD0401-15SB
1.8 2OA N1606
Will it do any damage to the circuitry in the control box or the stepper motor if I just try trial and error ? or would it be impossible to work out?
Cheers

Do you own a multimeter?
You just need to match your pairs really then polarity can be trial and error... see this guide here if you need help with how to do it:

Mate that is very very helpful. Im just trying to sort some 4 core cable out from somewhere then I will get investigating.
Cheers pal

No problem.
Just actually found this which is perhaps a slightly clearer explanation (especially regarding direction) and gives some other techniques if you lack a multimeter... though I'm not sure I would trust the complete trial and error one with expensive drivers/motors, but that's just my paranoia probably!

you need to use a multimeter ( or a simple battery & bulb continuity tester )to confirm which two wires goes to each motor winding
if you find you have 3 ohms or so between the red & yellow wires connect them to A+ and A- on your driver
you should then find you that you have 3 ohms or so between the
blue & green wires which you should connect them to B+ and B- on the stepper driver
not all stepper drivers have the required fault protection to survive any connection between the A & B terminals
if you find the motor runs the wrong way you can either change it in the controllers software - eg mach 3 changing the direction pin from active high to active low
or
reversing the wires on one winding
eg
changing from
red to A+ and yellow to A-
to
red to A- and yellow to A+

Take any 2 wires from the 4 and cross them together and try and turn the motor shaft. When you feel resistance you have a matched pair. (The stepper's are working as a generator)
Then wire 2 pairs next to each other in the 4 pin connector.
Try it if the motor's run the wrong way either swap the wires around or change the setting in the firmware to invert axis.Last edited by Desertboy; 15-07-2017 at 10:33 AM.
http://www.mycncuk.com/threads/10880...60cm-work-area My first CNC build WIP 120cm*80cm
If you didn't buy it from China the company you bought it from did ;)

thanks very much, very helpful, also is this cable ok to use for my wiring:

I would go for a screened cable like 4 core CY. https://quickbit.co.uk/Cable/CY-Cabl...-0-75mm-4-core
