Is the 3mm hardwood side visible to the end user?
If not, how about a thick angle bracket riveted to the hardwood board, then a countersunk screw bolted through the aluminium plate into the angle bracket.
This will not be massively strong as it is only held on by the top part of the countersink. It will also need accurate countersink holes drilling but it does give a flush solution.
If you don't want to see the screw head then maybe you could glue the bracket to the aluminium sheet.
