It's conventional to use brass tube, a dam around the work and a fluid to carry diamond for core drilling if you don't have industrially bonded diamond core drills.
Diamond on commercial core drills is in a metal carrier because that's the only thing that won't easily fracture and break off when it's placed under cutting loads.You think that's too expensive? You're not a Model Engineer are you? :D
