If I was retro fit dual steppers to the Y Axis of a Chinese 6040 CNC Router, would it be best to keep the Gantry brace that runs under the bed, or is it not required?
Mentioning I would be using extrusion for Gantry instead of the thin plate used now.

Either will work fine. I've built machines with both methods and they perform just the same. However, what the cross brace allows you to do is move the ball-screws and motors under the bed out of the way protecting them from debris if you like.

Thanks Jazz. Good to know one doesnt need to use a bottom plate if using 2 steppers.
A simpler build is good.
