I have a 9 x 20 hf lathe and have installed a stepper for variable feed. It works great but i would like to be able to turn of the motor off with a switch when it is not needed temporarily. I think i just jump 5 V to enable + and then install a switch between enable + and - . I am not sure if this is correct . I need some confirmation or The correct way to do it. A schematic is worth a thousand words . I would hateClick image for larger version.

I haven’t used enable but I’m pretty sure it works something like you described. But wait for a second opinion. My main concern is if you rotate the motors they will send power into the drivers which they might not like. I think it would need a mechanical clutch as well.

Is it the Clough42 ELS system by the way ?

I am using a simple program from Dronebot workshop that just allows me to change direction and speed. I have a tachometer on the machine so in the future i may try and write a program that ties the stepper to the spindle speed. I think if i was going for full control i might go for Jon Bryan's program. It looks simpler.
