Hi, I am looking for a NEMA 34 stepper motor with a 9mm shaft and 4 wires. However I have only been find the motors this size with 8 wires. Can anyone please let me know How to wire up an 8 wire motor to a stepper driver that is set up for a 4 wire motor. Thanks the wires from the motor are yellow, orange, black, red, brown, white, green, blue. . I have seen that to get the best out of the motor you need to give it lots of power. So what would be the best stepper driver for this. The motor is a 4 amp 3.5nm unit. Thanks

You need to find the datasheet for the motor so we can determine the correct wire sequences.
Best choice is to wire it in 'parallel' so 8 wires becomes 4 parallel pairs for a 4 wire driver.
Now personally, I would get a DM860T driver (110vdc/80vac) and run the driver on at least 80vdc. (or 60-70vac).
I have done this with my 1080oz/in motor.
I was initially using 60vdc but the jump to 80vdc saw a massive improvement.
Z axis on the mill rapids went from 2200mm/min on 60v to 3700mm/min on 80v and can get huge accelerations.

Thank for information. Ok. I have paired the 8 wires to make 4 pairs. However unlike a 4 wire motor I can’t find which of the pairs go together as I am not getting any feedback from the ohm meter. So I am unsure how to pair up the 4 sets. Also the DM860T driver needs by the look of it a lot more voltage then my 24 volt power supply can give out. So what do I need to do here.

Nema34 on a 24v is a no go. Having a laugh there. It will be total crap. You will get hardly any max velocity.
Voltage V gives you speed.
Current A gives you torque.
24v+,= nema17
36v+,= nema23/24
60v+,= nema34
What is the model number on the nameplate of the motor (if it's there).
Nema 23/24 are the nuts on drivers supplied with 60vdc.
Nema34 are miles better on drivers supplied at least 80vdc
Edit: most if not all nema34 have 14mm shafts.
Are you sure you don't mean nema24!?Last edited by dazp1976; 10-08-2022 at 07:08 PM.

Went with a closed loop system in the end. Thanks for input
