Hi,
My background is in Chemistry and Computing but over the last 3 or 4 years I've dusted off my electronics and have built two small CNC machines. The first was a bootstrap machine that pushes a dremel around. The second, built using the first, is a bit bigger and sports a spin saw. Not perfect but much better than the first.
I've been learning to build using PIC microcontrollers. First the 16F and 18F series and now the newer dsPIC33s. Along the way I've moved to surface mount and have even managed to send a few PCB designs to China for more professional looking boards.
I do this as a hobby and so far it's been a real hoot. You can see some of my projects at www.dr-iguana.com if you are interested.
Cheers.
