would these be ok running from a cheap 24v 10a power supplies?
and could I hook it up to something like this http://www.diycnc.co.uk/html/pcpps.html
and have quite a cheap setup?

They would run from that power supply. The problem is 30v (let alone 24v) is not enough to run most Nema 23 stepper motors effectively. The higher the voltage you run the motor on the higher the speed you can get since the torque drops off less rapidly. It's because the inductance of the stator coils limit the current that can flow at a low voltage... v(t)=L*di(t)/dt
You want at least 50V ... general rule is required voltage=20*L^0.5 where L is the motor phase inductance.

True, I might have been a bit quick to assume that he wanted to run the motors optimally. It would be cheap. I think it's the 3Nm motors... so they would have to be used in Bipolar-series which doesn't help matters.
I started off with 1nm motors and a unipolar stepper driver on my milling machine. It worked, but snails go faster than the 1mm/s it did.Last edited by Jonathan; 28-07-2011 at 12:56 PM.

Hi, I was using them to run some 23 frame 2Nm motors, easily did 600rpm which was more than enough for me.
With my 3mm ball screw I got feeds of 1800mm per min no trouble at 24v.
Cheers.

Good,
Now use the money to get a new avatar, the one you are using is butt ugly, it's even worse than the old one.John S -
