Sounds sensible to me. I'll post you a 6mm single flute carbide cutter if you like... they've useful for everything anyway.

Theoretically if you're just using the surfacing from the 6mm cutter as a reference to dial in the Z-axis you could just make the 6mm cutter cut a ring to save time. In practice it might be best to surface the whole lot anyway.
