Click the “Start” button, launch the “Control Panel” and click the “Network and Sharing Center” link on the computer sharing the Internet connection. Select “Set Up a New Connection or Network” under "Change Your Network Settings" to choose a network connection option. Choose “Set Up a Wireless Ad Hoc (Computer-to-Computer) Network” and click the “Next” button. The following screen provides information about ad hoc networks and lets you know that the computers and modem must be within 30 feet of one another. Click the “Next” button to continue.

You can use vpn to configure the setting too, if the options are limited.

Yes, it's easier and much simpler today than it was 13 years ago. But you have to remember that some people still use XP or W95 to run their CNC.
