    It is indeed a Casagrande Device...

    However the need to construct it has passed as 'The Clay Research Group' actually publish the info I needed, which is the Plasticity Index of the clay in my garden (well, in the post code area), and I'm going to have to make the hole deeper around the edge by a good 150mm :(
