Paul, don't know if this is a possibility but worth an email at least. I use a program for signmaking called vinylmaster. When I first started looking into building a cnc I emailed them because there ware a number of engraving machines listed as being supported. They explained to me that some engravers used HPGL so certain engraving machines are supported. With these machines it is possible to cut straight from the program, there is a wizard for doing all the toolpath stuff in the program.

There are 3 versions of the program but for what you need I would think the lite version would be OK & that's a lot less expensive than something like engravelab.

Hi thanks for your response.
The only problem with vinylmasters is that their hpgl I am assuming will only do 2d. I'll definitely have a look though. At the moment I've bought a copy of vertic cut 2d which seems to be nice easy well thoughtout program to use. I've downloaded a free dnc program, which will output the file direct to my cnc machine without having to go through my old cam software. I can output a basic 2d profile at the moment, but need to try and modify the post processor in cut 2d to get z command.
