Can anyone tell me what the nema 23 nema 34 and so on is meant to signify, i nkow what they are refering to but for instance are they like shoe sizes or are they like spanner sizes..

I believe it's the face width of the face.....i.e. 2.3" x 2.3" for a NEMA 23....1.7" x 1.7" fro a NEMA 17 etc. etc.

Also this explains why sometimes the larger, e.g. 3Nm and 4Nm, 'Nema 23' stepper motors are called Nema 24. It's because their body is 60mm wide which is closer to 2.4" than 2.3", which is why it's always best to check the drawing if you have one.
