    I suppose you could use ebony as a wood for the bearings as I think it is self oiling like in the John Harrison clocks.

    Great idea for your first project (shouldn't need any padding). Will you go for an escapement movement, pendulum,spring or will you go for motor driven clock? Either way it will be interesting to see your design and work on the forum. G.
