Thread: How do precision grinders work?

I know they use abrasives to grind/polish a part etc but I don't understand how they can produce such precision.
Surely the surface of a grinding wheel is uneven and prone to wear and would not be able to finish a part without changing it's own dimensions/characteristics? I cannot work out how you can grind a piece of work to 0.001mm without constantly adjusting the grinder?
