Thread: Telescopic Gauges

I'm looking for a set of telescopic gauges as measuring internal bores is (at best) hit and miss with a vernier. They won't get used a LOT, so I don't really want to spend a fortune on Mitutoyo. Are these any good, or complete tat?

Also, can anyone recommend a decent set of outside micrometers?Last edited by birchy; 25-06-2013 at 11:37 PM.

I use a couple of sets just like those on a daily basis doing bearing bores with no problem.
Once you get used to them, let them spring open whilst tilted so they are bigger than the bore, then nip the handle and swing them thru an arc and out the bore.
Best to practise on the bore of an old bearing, these are usually dead nuts.Last edited by John S; 27-06-2013 at 08:33 PM.

Thanks John. Yeah, I've used telescopic gauges at work but only decent quality ones, so was a bit dubious about those cheap things. You reckon they're OK?

I've got a set like those, think they were either from Chronos or RDG Tools. They work ok tho sometimes they get a bit sticky and don't spring out so well. Keeping them central in the bore while nipping them up takes some practice.
