Clive I did think about that just after the sneaking out at night but didn't pursue it because that would be green timber & I was really hoping to be able to find something that had been dried, that was before I discovered that there didn't seem to be many other options though so might be worth further investigation thanks.
Got a couple of sawmills to try & phone as well to see if they do anything.

A few of the tree surgeons in this area have stock piles of old tree trunks that they cut up later for firewood etc. Good luck with the project Clive

Try "wood carving blanks" in either eBay, Amazon or Google...

Was just a lucky guess. I've never bought any but at the end of the day, price/quality will be the deciding factor. At least with eBay, you get to see what you're buying...

You might have more luck asking this question in the (or some other) woodworking forum: General Metal & Wood Working

    EDIT:
A quick Google threw this one, which has some nice links for suppliers 'oop north... http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59342
They use round tree blanks for carving bowls, so might be worth adding that to your search.

Already did that thanks Birchy, from the other search I did I found that another option was bowl blanks so looked at that as well, got a number of places to call mainly places like sawmills that cut the blanks themselves. Couple are mentioned in that link you have posted thanks.
m_c I did think about searching for firewood suppliers but then thought that what they would have & sell would be to small a diameter, maybe completely wrong about that lol.
