Thread: Overheating stepper motors

Hi, folks. I have hot pots! After maybe towards an hour, my stepper motors overheat. They can get to 80+ degrees C! (useful to light my cigarettes from..;)
I'm using that blasted TB6560 blue Chinese board (with NEMA 17's on a Zen 6x6 router), and was wondering if setting the DIP switches to a lower amperage might help? I'm running it at 15v, and it sucks (the board) 1.5A max on a typical cut.
On startup, all motors run fine, with no untoward noises.

I worried about the steppers on my machine which probably reach that kind of temp. When I googled it a bit, the general view was that steppers do run hot, and I seem to remember figures of over 100C being normal. I don't worry if it's too hot to touch as long as it isn't hot enough to boil water (i.e. fizz when you touch it with a wet fingertip). I did turn down the max current a bit, which helped.

I have found a PRC i/r thermometer very useful for this, too - it probably only cost me a fiver from fleabay... Cheers for your response.
