You mention cutting metal, small machine, so this to me indicates a small cnc milling machine rather than a router. Self building a milling machine is impractical I think so you could buy a second hand one and convert it to cnc, or if you do want to build a router have you sen the build logs here ? http://www.mycncuk.com/forums/252-MACHINE-BUILDING
