The ground side of the rail is designed to butt up to a machined vertical face so that if the machined face is straight then the rail will also be straight. The carriages have a ground side as you explained and I used that face to measure from and to place my large T square on when I was getting everthing square.Spelling mistakes are not intentional, I only seem to see them some time after I've posted
