Hiya,
Ive come up against a problem with my build that im not sure of, here goes;
the machine is basically a lathe to turn down the diameter of tyres, what I need help with is the z traverse. My plan was to have a lead screw with a manual handle, but my prototype proved it would be very uncomfortable to wind for so long, so I want to have a motor to drive it. The problem I have is that I need to be able to wind it on manually then switch to feed, the feed needs to be controllable incase the cut starts to have trouble. I also dont know what feed rate I need to begin with so I need to be able to vary it from nearly nothing. Any ideas? Is it possible to put a speed controller on the motor that drives the lead screw?
Thanks
Jay

Sounds like the best thing is a small DC motor driving a reduction gearbox with a variable speed on it.
Something like this.
This actually has two 15:1 gearboxes on itbecause i had them and I need this welding rotator to go from real slow to real slow plus a bit.
It runs off a big mains variac and you wind it to whatever speed is comfortable.John S -
