Exotic NSK Linear Motors - what to do with them?..
Hey folks - long time lurker on the forum and need some advice.
I’ve some exotic linear motors and a pile of heavy duty extruded aluminium. What to do with them!?
I was going to build a new machine but life gets in the way so time for a clear out. Seems too good to weigh in at the scrappy though.
It was a very high end sampling machine in it’s day. Cost about £500,000 10 years ago.
The linear motors are things of beauty - but they’re a bit beyond me. One is rail is 1500mm other is 1200mm.
The controllers have some literature available but way over my head!
I’ve been tripping over them for 2 years now so need to do something about it.
So what to do - try and get it all working**, weigh it all in, or split for sale?
Anyone have experience with linear motors?
** even if I could figure it out I’ve no idea of torque values or anything else about the motors. It will be super accurate when up and running though - and I bet it crazy fast and fun to play with :o)

You need the datasheet to make it work
https://www.nskamericas.com/en/produ...nocarrier.html
I don't see it, I can't see the drive on the ones you pictured
RS232 is a serial port to talk to a PC, probably so you can program the driver
The IO looks like a parallel port
Sensor is probably for closed loop
But without the datasheet you cannot do a lot with it
You should contact NSK
They will send you the datasheets
Re: Exotic NSK Linear Motors - what to do with them?..
Sorry for the late reply.
The first 3 pictures are the drivers. The linear drives themselves are part of the "Megathrust" series and use the "Megatorque" drivers.
I've reached out to NSK before and got no where...

That may be because I don't really know what I'm looking at. I'm fine with GRBL and arduino based CNCs but that' the limit of my experience.
I was hoping for a simple STEP/DIR setup :glee:
