my cnc

hi guys i really hope you can help me with this one.
i keep on trying to mill a sign or an 3d object but i keep having the same issue when ever i select my home position on my material this being wood when i load the file in to universal gcode sender pus run or send my machine starts running and mooving to its first position as it should but every time it plunges deep as far as it can go in to the wood it cant moove because of how deep its gone and burns the wood , no matter what i do it happens all the time so HEELLLLP! please

Sounds like you need to take multiple passes. This will be dependant on your CAM software. Also CAM software often has a simulated preview that is worth watching before hitting the send as it can show these things up.

Due to covid19 the crystal ball has lost it sheen.

So how about giving some specs about the machine, what controller and the top few lines of the gcode.

It would also help with a couple of pics would be nice as well

Fusion 360 is your CAD and cam software the controller could be mach3 or something else and what does your machine look like and how about posting your g code.

i use fusion 360 cam software then i send the g-code to universal g-code sender i also have candle controller which cam with my grbl cnc diy 3018 pro router laser machine.
Here are 2 images of my setup you can clearly see the plunge and burn mark from where it tries to travel along the x axis. Attachment 29466 i seem to have some issues let me know what you need and i will try to end it anoother way

Where and how do you touch off the part ie. at the bottom or the top and are you doing the same in fusion360 you generally touch off at the top off the part and that should be Z0.

Also when you jog the Z axis down dose the DRO go more -ve or +ve ie. generally the Z should go -ve when going down.

I have never used grbl.

Also in the code you are using a ball nose cutter for a pocket you should be using an endmill . This is nothing to do with your problem though

T thanks again Clive I hope i dont get to be a pain with this. where you see thhe burn mark on the wood im bringing z to within a paper thickness for my zero i dont quite understand about touch off and the -ve when going down sorry i am disabled on alot of meds which causes me very bad memory so i have to wright alot down, my x is along the length of the material and y is the width, sometimes though it seems as if the z axis travels too far because when it lifts out of the wood it trvels almost to the top of its wall.

I am not familiar with your controller. Touch off means that you jog down to the top of the part and then press the touch off button this should then set the DRO (readout) to zero.

Does the controller have a DRO . Can you post a picture of the controller?

I think Clive has you covered with technical help. I'll offer some experience based help - have you tried running it without the wood in place? You might spot the issue that way :) Make sure your limit switches are in place however!

Hi Clive here are 2 pictures the second one being the ugs is the one i use the most unless you can think of a better one, anyway i thank you for your patient but please if you get to a point where youve had enough or you cant do any more please let me know i do understand just how problematic some of these things can be.

in yellow is the DRO when you jog down in Z| does the Z readout go more -ve ??

In Green I presume that the feed rate (now set at 991) is where you will change the cutting speed in mm/min the setting at present is way too fast so set that to 100 as a start.

The step size I think is the jog increment for X and Y The same for the Z So if the Z is set at 1 it should move 1mm for every press of the button.

In Blue that is to set the home position ( can be anywhere) but best set at one end of the axis ( say the left side for X and towards you for Y) Set to near the top of the Z

In Red I am not sure but it looks like you set that at the top of the part corner. When you do that it should make the DRO zero then if you jog the machine ie. 20mm the DRO should read 20 and the actual physical distance should be 20mm travelled. If it has not travelled the correct distance you have another problem to fix.

Please be as concise as you can. Is the above what you are actually doing?

well done my friend you got it all correct that is what all the parts that you marked is correct thank you i have now changes from 991 to 100 set zero as you discribed as i always have done but i did find that my z plunge rate was 3333.33mm/min so ive altered that but i am trying to find a good cnc control software.

Ok does that mean you have it working?

You have not answered the questions .

Does the Z readout go -ve going down?

Does the machine move the correct commanded distance on all axis?

Sorry my bad the machine works 99% it is just the z axis, if i set the jog to move say up or down say 1mm jog at a time when i send the information to the cnc or just jog the spindle it will move about 2cm instead of 1mm up or down now thats in jog mode or milling i hope iv'e explaining this correct
please for give my ignorence when you say Z readout go -ve going down i dont quite understand

Are you saying that if you command the Z axis to move down 1mm it actually moves 20mm !! Is so does the DRO show 20 or 1

when you zero the Z (it should show 0.000) and move the Z down does it put a - sign in front ie. -20.00?

im really sorry Clive for all this mess. Right in red yes i move the spindle to where i think zero should be the zero point , if i say moving the zero is 1mm the clock count in red reads 1mm when i move all xyz 1mm xandy move as it should set zero home position then the count in red returns to a zero readout. If i tell it to jog on the z axsis 1mm and press run the spindle runs about 20mm but on the readout red screen it says it has run only 1mm so that reads correct but the spindle is wrong
The DRO if set to 1mm will show only 1mm.

If your DRO shows 1mm Z movement and your actual movement is 20mm, you have wrong steps per mm so you have to calibrate your axes:

$100 = 42.610 (X-axis travel resolution, step/mm)
$101 = 42.610 (Y-axis travel resolution, step/mm)
$102 = 1060.00 (Z-axis travel resolution, step/mm)

Whatever you have in parameter $102, divide by 20 and write it back to the controller (arduino :)):
$102=newly calculated value.

First please put use the correct terms I mean tell us what is the reading on the DRO when you said you have moved down 1mm have you noticed the minus sign so it really says -1mm this in important. Now I know that when the Z goes down it goes -ve.

When you ran the code and I am not familiar with GRBL I noticed when the Z when down and it was not -ve it said 9mm

Now the first thing we need to get right is the fact that your machine on the Z axis it is moving 10 times too much. This has to be corrected before you carry on.

Is there any settings that you can alter. Pleas post a pic of the settings page. Can you open the control box a post a pic of the drives?

Hi iv'e been looking at that video link you sent me and it is very informative and helpfull so thank you for that. As far as the DRO is concerned if i set the depth of say 1mm on the DRO screen yes it doe's show the -1mm. Here is an image of the GCS in use with a Coke sign which i'm working on.

Colin as I have said there is no point in trying to cut anything until the parameters are set correctly.

Now concentrate on the Z axis only .

Find a block of wood about 50mm thick put this on the table and Zero the Z on the top of it.

Then move the block out of the way and command the Z to go down 1mm the DRO should read -1

Then measure arcuately how far the Z travelled down from the top of the block and report back.

This is the line in your text file you posted that we will alter to get it right $102 = 1900.000 (Z-axis travel resolution, step/mm)

OK, let's iron out some of your parameters.

If your stepper drivers are set to some amount of micro steps, you should set parameter $1 to 255, meaning that the motor(s) will never be disabled, except in E-Stop.
That parameter mean that the stepper driver will be disabled after certain amount of time (in microseconds) after the last Step pulse was generated. When drivers are set to any micro stepping when disabled, motor will jump to the nearest full step, consequences: loosing position.

From the rest of the parameters, I can see that you do not have limit switches on your machine, so you are homing "in place".

From the photo of your machine it is obvious that you have a Chinese one, and our Chinese sellers are well known that the parameters for your machine could be all over the place.

hi clive i done what you asked I moved the Z Down 1mm on the DRO it read -1mm but the actual movement was 5mm on the first try then 4.44mm on the second try

Acceleration too high so you are loosing steps, that's why you have only 4.44mm travel on second try.
As I wrote, you should calibrate your machine. Not only Steps Per, also Acceleration and Max Speed. All of these for each axis.

hi again yes i had a 4.44mm travel but the z axsis was set to only travel 1mm i agree with you i need to set all my perameters correctly clive sent me a video showing just how to do that.
