The coupling was loose and slipping rubbing against the screw it obviously caused the Z axis to lose steps and therefore its integrity.

I do not fully understand what this 'cylinder' is that you are refering to. I can only surmise that it is the Z axis end shaft.
If you get any slipping on this joint, you might try using loctite...

Originally you said the cutter bit was being dragged down into the job I don't think fixing the coupling will have anything to do with the first fault as the two halves of the coupling are not fixed...

Atleast on my machine, no motor-coupling would have anything to do with it.

If it's a clamp which holds the motor cylinder cut a strip of beer can to line the clamp and "shim" it tighter,

For an air cooled spindle you should use VW Beetle antifreeze :barbershop_quartet_

RV antifreeze is fine. In fact it is better than deioinised water on its own.

Tap water will inevitably have some mineral content and the minerals can be deposited on internal surfaces making heat transfer less efficient.
