I use 18mm MDF on my machine bed, which is considerably larger and I think it's a good choice for your machine.
You can screw directly into it

Aluminum is rather expensive for a bed if you go the solid plate with T channel route. It is still not "cheap" if you go the aluminum strap that you true and surface. MDF could be used but... -

EMC2 through and through and find it much easier to use that Mach3. Just make sure your PC has a fast on board graphics card or ditch it and get a decent seperate one. Thei site does have a PC...

As far as I can tell, and I've only played with it a little, EMC2 can do everything Mach3 does and more but it requires more work to get it going. If you are experienced with Linux I doubt you will...

search for "single flute carbide" on ebay, they are great for plastics and do pretty well on aluminium and are cheep enough to take a punt on (£20 ish for 10 x 1/8" )
