I used to say that 200 full steps per rev was fine for 1.7"motors, possibly okay for 2.3" but much too far for 3.4".

If you are cutting steel do not use one requiring a magnet.
The detector detects a passing object so it cannot be crushed if it fails. -

If it is always the same tap, no pitch change, why not gear vertical displacement to rotation? Drive it with anything you like.

MDF would usually be cut with a router bit because it is abrasive, aluminium alloy with a high helix milling cutter, pure aluminium is best cold formed because it really doesn't want to cut at all,...

The machine in your picture has a very low gantry. If you could make yours even lower that would improve it by leaps and bounds.

If all you want is to flow a flat surface, why not use Wood's Metal? That goes very runny and sets hard. You could even reflow it if you moved the machine.
