  1. Re: Stepper short list on VM32L Weiss mill advice - low inductance

I found that trying to get a decent torque rating with a good low inductance was nigh on imposible in the crappy uk. There's a lot of junk around!!!
    I'm using these 4nm (566oz) 3mh ind steppers in...
  2. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

The Toolco32B will be pretty much the same as the AMAT30LV.
I prefer the R8 taper and Toolco only had the 32B in MT3 when I last checked.
The Warco is geared so that put me off it.
  3. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

Following on from my last comment.
Have been rebuilding the X2 which is why I hadn't got round to look at mine yet.

Now in truth I am a little stumped!?
Just got round to un-crating my AMAT25LV...
  4. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

The AMAT25LV is the machine I'd go for. (Mine is still sitting in it's crate)
Unless you need a longer Y, then I'd go for the 30.

The 25 is closer to the Precision Matthews PM25V in terms of...
  5. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

Mike. The offer still stands if you want to pop over and see my machines and a chat. I will be selling at sometime a Novamill with ball screws and and electronics updated to Linuuxcnc with Mesa...
  6. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

Have a look at the Denford forum of old machines or Boxford cnc machines. They both have small old machines which have ballscrews. Electronics conversions are relatively cheap.
  7. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

It will be much easier to buy an older machine with ball screws fitted which has obsolete electronics and fit new electronics.
  8. Re: CNC conversion AMAT25LV AMAT30LV WM18 advice needed for total novice

    Mike,
In order to avoid unpleasant surprises you ideally need to choose a machine which someone else has converted and documented, this way you will know in advance what will fit where and what...

Re: is Epoxy levelling just for steel ?

My mk2 and mk3 used aluminium profile to bolt the rails to and I made plenty of good parts with it (including parts for the current mk4 under construction).

I did not flatten the surfaces or prep...

Aluminum or steel box - your choice! My machine is all steel box section, welded, including the gantry (which is relatively uncommon). I also used a fair bit of 20mm aluminum plate for brackets,...

Welcome Mike, I built my machine without doing any drawings just rough sketches. I used a pillar drill and a set of calipers, it was fairly accurate but not totally(current tollerance of under...

NEW MEMBER: Re: New Member Introduction

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum. I have read your other post and see you are looking to build a machine.
The usual advice is to say not to buy anything until you have a design done in cad...

    The Electrickery

The early design decision which drove much of the design in this area was the selection of the CSMIO-IP/M motion controller. This choice was driven mainly by discussion on this...

    Drive system

The drive system on my machine is pretty conventional. Nema 23/3Nm steppers driving the ballscrews through 1-1 pulleys and HTD5 belts.
I fitted pulleys partly because I wondered at...

    BUILD LOG: AVOR – a steel-framed medium-size router (3)

    Epoxy levelling

I want to be a bit controversial here.

First – using epoxy to level isn’t as easy as it looks. It’s not that difficult either, but there are a few gotchas.

    Secondly - you...

    Basic Structure

As described in the intro, I used 3mm wall thickness box section steel throughout for frame and gantry, with a mix of 50x50 and 100x50. The frame is pretty straightforward. I found...

    BUILD LOG: AVOR – a steel-framed medium-size router

The title? Medium-size – bigger than a bench-top machine but not as big as a “full-sheet” 8x4. Steel-framed – basic structure is steel box section throughout, including the gantry, no aluminium...
