If the parts are made as rigid as they should be the weight will be centred even if the vertical plate carrying it is not.
You think that's too expensive? You're not a Model Engineer are you? :D

I think I'd be more inclined to use more smaller fasteners instead of 3 M8's, that way you should get a more evenly distributed/less distorted and stronger join between the parts.
I'd probably go for a row of M5, or maybe M6.Avoiding the rubbish customer service from AluminiumWarehouse since July '13.
