Hi Bert,
The sensor in your cam is probably fine, although if the overall dimension of the camera is only 8mm it maybe harder to work with. The VGA sensors we are using are 2mm across.

Bert - I don't think that the sensor needs to be on the moving part - I can imagine a rotating blade on the end of the ballscrew with a fixed sensor next to it.

If you make 6mm holes for switch access you can make neat little Top-Hat shaped buttons to fit from the inside of the case prior to fixing the pulse generator, it makes the job neat, the buttons easy...

I have a 1.5kW spindle and used an 18mm 2 flute router bit to skim a wooden bed without a problems. You could probably go larger - there is a larger bottom cutting type bit which others have used.

My stepper motors are grounded through the machine frame.
