SOLD: Re: JazzCNC (Dean) built small router

    Mark,
I'm very interested in your CNC. I lost my entire workshop in a fire last month - all uninsured - and am gradually starting to think about replacing stuff. I find it quite hard to live without...

Re: What software can do this ?

I was just browsing around, and (very belatedly) came across this thread.
I had much the same problem some time ago, and while I agree that Inkscape is a good solution to this kind of problem, its...

No problem, will be sometime tomorrow
  5. Re: Can anyone with a fancy pc help me with a 3d model

Ok, I have opened the file with no problems but the model has a very high and dense mesh count with errors. See image.
My workstation is fairly high spec with a Quadro P5000 and 128gb RAM, so you...
  6. Re: Can anyone with a fancy pc help me with a 3d model

    Mark
I can open the file in space claim but it is massive
I’ve tried all the setting that I understand but it will only reduce to 1.47 gb (from 4.7gb)
I saved it as a obj and an stl file both...
  7. Re: Can anyone with a fancy pc help me with a 3d model

I can help you with this if your struggling.
  8. Re: Can anyone with a fancy pc help me with a 3d model

I will be happy to try ..
Using Rhino I can open obj models, at least an online download of Ironman, 16 MB, worked fine.
Using an industrial PC with Nvidia graphics and 8 GB RAM on the graphics...
  9. Re: Can anyone with a fancy pc help me with a 3d model

    Re: Temperamental spindle

Pd 143 should be set to 2 its hard to believe it ever started with this set to 5
    Pd 3 set to 400
Pd 11 I would set to 55 so that the lowest spindle speed would be about 3300
    Pd 14 set to...

    Re: Temperamental spindle

Sorry Clive I've confused you. I meant he may need to buy a new VFD. As I understand it this is the original one the Dean installed.

    Re: Temperamental spindle

I agree but I thought in post #4 I tried to establish that he had just removed the two cables from the vfd end and put a link in place. (to prove if the vfd would run)

I also agree that if it is...

    Re: Temperamental spindle

I hear you. Difficult to diagnose over a forum, much quicker if you were there in person.
I'd only just read this thread and had to comment in case Mark messed around with the control cabinet...

I am all ears. I was trying to establish if the the relay contact on the board (or control system) had gone wonky.
shorting FOR and DCM should start the spindle I hope:confusion:

    Problem is it...

Re: Any one routed Sapele "mahogany"?

Yep, wow that's a few years ago now lol The thing with sapele is the uniform grain, as you can see on the piece above , how uniform it runs vertically and almost perfectly spaced. I've seen it...

  18. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

All thats been said plus Also good idea to bring the material into enviroment it's going to live and leave for while before cutting so it settles and adjusts to temps/moisture.

    The longer and...
  19. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

agree, but the op want to try 3d... so probably going to crash somewhere a few times.... I don't see the point in wasting good wood, using more power and accelerating tool wear to "practice", you can...
  20. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

The harder the wood, the cleaner it tends to cut.
  21. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

Might be okay in some cases but no good if you want to cut a board into two, say a 2 1/2" into two 1 1/4" also no good if book matching two halves.

Softwood is something I won't entertain, unless...
  22. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

take equal amounts off both faces :friendly_wink:

any fine grade wood should be fine, but for just "playing" with I would just use softwood
  23. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

When buying wood you need to buy the nearest thickness board to your final requirements. Cutting thicker boards into thinner ones generally always results in warping because thick wood has a higher...
  24. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

I have used beech and it does cut nice and finish well.

The drier the better obviously, movement in the wood is the biggest problem, I can fly cut a bit of oak and within hours it's bent like a...
  25. Re: best hardwood for first 3d milling attempt and end grain vs side grain

American Maple, Basswood (lime). You can get good stuff from John Boddy Timber Boroughbridge but go into the big sheds and buy sawn boards if you can rather than from the sanitised 'consumer' bit.
