If both are powered from the same 12V supply, they should already share a common... -

Remember electricity does not care about the colour. In Spain the black wire is the live phase, where as here it used to be red now it it brown :apthy:

Okay, I've spent 2 minutes on the Makerbase website and given up - have you got instructions for the board, and in particular which are the A+/A- and B+/B- terminals on those 4 way plugs?

As long as the correct coil pairs are matched, the only difference it'll make is what direction the motor runs.

Just to expand on that JST are a range of solderless connectors and have different types within the range. Have a read here:

Looks like a JST.
Pretty common connector, and you'll find premade pigtails available from various sources, if you don't want to crimp your own. -

I'd personally not put a sheet of ali under an unenclosed laser. I'd put down a sheet of something sacrificial that'll absorb the laser, not reflect it around!

If you use a TB6600 stepper driver set to 4A
a stepper motor rated at 4.2 amps will run at the 4A set by the driver so there should be no problem
