  1. Re: Starting a diary of my Openbuilds laser build - good - bad - ugly

Looking good. Just a passing, friendly thought - if you've not got/planned it already - it's generally recommended for a little air-assist, particularly with composite materials, so when you ablate...

Re: Looks impressive for the money ?

One thing I've not seen mentioned, is how are the laser and arduino powered, and are they suitably connected?

If both are powered from the same 12V supply, they should already share a common...

    Hello Fivetide

Love the avatar by the way!!

What's wrong with that - it looks great to me - looks like a classic OpenBuilds style machine

  6. Re: Help with wiring on a stepper please (Very No0b question dont laugh)

Remember electricity does not care about the colour. In Spain the black wire is the live phase, where as here it used to be red now it it brown :apthy:
  7. Re: Help with wiring on a stepper please (Very No0b question dont laugh)

Okay, I've spent 2 minutes on the Makerbase website and given up - have you got instructions for the board, and in particular which are the A+/A- and B+/B- terminals on those 4 way plugs?

    If so -...
  8. Re: Help with wiring on a stepper please (Very No0b question dont laugh)

As long as the correct coil pairs are matched, the only difference it'll make is what direction the motor runs.

Re: Help with identifying fitting please :)

Just to expand on that JST are a range of solderless connectors and have different types within the range. Have a read here:
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector

    Probably JST-XH?

Re: Help with identifying fitting please :)

    Looks like a JST.
Pretty common connector, and you'll find premade pigtails available from various sources, if you don't want to crimp your own.

Then keep a fire extinguisher handy :)

You'll lose coherency on anything other than a polished surface, the amount of energy reflected back into the LED - there'll be some, but not a huge amount. ...

Re: Looks impressive for the money ?

I'd personally not put a sheet of ali under an unenclosed laser. I'd put down a sheet of something sacrificial that'll absorb the laser, not reflect it around!

    Re: Stepper motor ampage question

If you use a TB6600 stepper driver set to 4A
a stepper motor rated at 4.2 amps will run at the 4A set by the driver so there should be no problem
the motor torque will be reduced to 4/4.2 of...

My thoughts too, if fixed force.
For fixed speed a stepper, stepper driver, variable frequency pulse generator and toothed pulleys & belts.
